Attention****************

This mushroom was previously identified as the Red belted Connk Fomitopsis pinicola. Recent studies have show it is a discrete species of Conk that is a subsidiary of the fomitopsis genus with the epithet mounceae. More research needs to be done into the novelty of its medicinal properties however it is believed to have a very similar secondary metabolite profile as pinicola.

Fomitopsis pinicola

Red Belted Conk General Info

Wild Harvested from the Upper Peninsula MI in the Superior Forests, Red Belted Conk is a powerful anti-cancer mushroom whose use extends back thousands of years to hunter gatherers. As a Fomitopsis with a very woody texture, it has been traditionally used to maintain embers between fires, specially prepared in food for its nutrients and used medically (1). Rich in polysaccharides, ethanolic extracts have shown promising angiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties (2). Proficient anti-microbial activity and anti-oxidizing activity has also been reported (3). The steroidal presence in pinicola has also lent greatly to its medicinal value.

"These principal compounds showed important medicinal effects on the human body by providing a shield effect to the internal organs against diseases and also heal the damaged tissues and organs. The pharmacological effects of F.pinicola active constituents include anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic by controlling obesity, anti-oxidant effect, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory." (4)

It also showed an industrial waste treatment effect degrading harmful pesticides, solvents, other typically environmentally toxic heavy metals (4)

Extraction

Using 1:5 w/w mushroom/water solvent ratio, wild harvested F.pinicola was first boiled in water and temperature maintained around 100 degrees Celsius to maintain the highest amount of bioactive principles (19). Two fractions (now A and B) were created, a soxhlet extraction and a decoction extracted fraction. Both A and B were extracted between 90 and 100 degrees celcius for 7 hours in 7.0 pH water. Extracts were then strained from solvent and A was placed back inside of the soxhlet to be extracted with 200 proof ethanol, while B continued its water decoction at room temperature in a hermeticlaly sealed vessel on 5-20-22.
